5 Work From Home Tips

Hi everyone!

Working from home can sometimes be more challenging than going to “the office”. There are many things vying for your attention at home: television, kids, comfortable beds, a fridge full of food, personal phone calls.

I have recently been working from home and I absolutely LOVE it, but I quickly realized there were a few things I needed to do in order to help me feel my best and most productive self. I want to share my top 5 tips with you.

Tip #1: Claim Your Space.

Depending on the layout of your home, a room with a door or sitting upright at a table decreases distractions and signals to your family—as well as your own mind—that you are concentrating on work. Think about an extra bedroom you can convert into an office or setup shop at the far-end of your dining table. Avoid plopping down on that comfy couch in the living room or jumping into bed with your laptop—it’s too tempting to get lazy in these spots.

Tip #2: Get Dressed!

One of the perks of WFH is the dress code! You can grind away in your favorite robe and fuzzy slippers and while I have nothing against being cozy in your own home, I challenge that you may not be at your most productive in this attire. Listen, I DEFINITELY do not put on actual clothes every single day but when I do, I feel refreshed and ready to tackle my day. I choose a comfortable outfit that I can sit in all day and I usually decline footwear.

Tip #3: Pick the Right Time of Day.

Choosing the right time of day to begin your day is imperative to being as fruitful as possible. Although I am not a morning person—if you are like me—I need the bright, recharging, mood-boosting daylight to fuel my energy and disposition. However, I know musicians whose day doesn’t typically start until 9:00 in the evening. So, whatever your profession, select the time that encourages efficiency and creativity.

Tip #4: Surround Yourself with Inspiration.

So, you’ve claimed that great space, you got dressed and you are working at the optimal time of day, now it’s time to place things around you that inspire. For me, a candle is a must! There is something about that soft glowing light that calms and soothes me—perfect for those days with stressful deadlines. I also love having words of affirmation, to speak confidence to my abilities. Color plays a vital role in our mood and outlook. The color palette in my office is comprised of cool grays, soft earth tones and muted pastels—I am able to think clearly and spawn a lot of ideas here.

Tip #5: Type-Cast Your Ideal Space.

My final tip is to ensure your space is conducive to the type of business you are running or tasks you are performing. For me, it was important that I have an area to receive clients. I didn’t want to conduct a business meeting in my living room. So, I have a settee that seats two and is proportionate to the room. A private chef may want to consider bar seating and prep space for cooking demos, or a personal trainer would need an open area with high ceilings for fitness equipment and freedom of movement. Think about what you need to do, how you need to do it, and if anyone needs to do it with you. Let these inform the type of space you need.

Now that we’ve discussed some suggestions to help you be more productive, positive, practical and creative when working from home, let’s get to it!

Week in Wears | Accessories Edition

Hi guys, I'm back with another Week in Wears edition. This post is all about accessories. Fun interesting pieces that I haven't reached for in a while. I really enjoyed connecting with these styles again and remembering what drew me to them in the first place. It's always fun to go digging through your closets and drawers for lost treasures. I feel like I went shopping all over again! Xoxo-Maya

A Week in Wears | Work Edition

A Week in Wears | Work Edition

Happy Monday,

I'm thinking of starting "A Week in Wears" Series where I'll blog my outfits for the week. Like most females I dress according to my mood, which can change from day to day but in many cases I notice some underlying theme. I may do all prints  or all black or skirts. I think it's an interesting way to blog my Outfit Of The Day. I'm still going to post OOTD on my Instagram page @styl_isle but the blog will go more in depth so be sure to check back each week!

This post catalogs what I wore to work last week. Do you notice a theme or trend?

Ciao for now!

MONDAY
Shirt: Banana Republic, Skirt: DeJanero (NYC), Belt: (thrifted), Flats: H&M, Necklace: JewelMint.com

Love this cool casual look. I really responded to the softer color palette for me with the structured collared shirt. Pulled the look together wither a cobalt blue pencil skirt, and tan colored belt and flats.

TUESDAY
Dress: DeJanero (NYC), Belt: H&M, Sweater: H&M

Wanted to keep with the easy feeling from yesterday and so decided on this effortless dress that has a nautical feel. Brightened things up with a bright coral belt and lipstick. The gray sweater was a perfect neutral compliment for the fidget temps in my office.

WEDNESDAY
Skirt: DeJanero (NYC), Shirt: H&M, Pumps: Ralph Lauren

Polished things up mid-week by choosing a sleek pencil skirt and sleeveless shirt. I kept things interesting by choosing a skirt with an interesting snake-like pattern and ruffled shirt collar. I kept the rest of the accessories pretty simple. I especially like how many tortoise shell frames play off of the pattern of the skirt. Classic black pumps complete the look.

THURSDAY
Shirt: Joe Fresh, Slacks: H&M, Pumps: Anne Klein (thrifted)

Old faithful and definitely an old staple...BLACK! I paired this silk shirt with my go-to black slack from H&M (they never let me down!) I've been loving the texture and movement of this necklace this week so I definitely threw it back on for some visual interest and switched up my black pumps for these blush and rose gold beauties.

FRIDAY
I was off...off to the beach!!

Sporty Spice

Hi Islers!

Today was one of those lazy Saturdays. I relaxed in bed most of the day with Netflix and later took my mom out for her birthday...she wanted P.F. Chang's and boy was it spicy!

I wanted to wear something that reflected the ease of the relaxed day but wasn't bummy...casual cute! I recently picked up this sweater dress from J. Crew and I've been looking forward to the day I could sport this sweet little number. We're in the dog days of summer so it's still hot, but the material isn't too heavy and I knew we'd be indoors...I'm always freezing. Gray is my favorite color so this dress is already a favorite of mine. One thing I hate about sweater dresses is the cling! Simply because of the nature of the material, sometimes you can find yourself tugging and pulling, which leaves those oh-so-annoying pucker marks in the fabric. No so with this dress, it's very forgiving. I kept the sporty theme going with my brand new, first ever, pair of Chucks! *covers faces with hands* I mean nothing goes better with sweatshirts than a crispy white pair of sneakers? I added minimal accessories to complete the look and headed out for some delicious Chinese food. Hope you guys had a great relaxing Saturday too!

Ciao for now!

The Call Back

Hello Islers,

It's been quite sometime since my last post...hope everyone is doing well.

I wanted to share a recent outfit of the day that I thought would be appropriate for a call back interview. The call back interview is one where you've been asked to come back because there was something about you that they liked. This is your second opportunity to not only make an impression professionally but personally. In the second, and sometimes third interviews, I feel it's completely appropriate to wear something a little less formal (not casual) and let more of your personality shine through.

For this look I chose a striped sheath dress and white collared shirt from Joe Fresh. I paired it with chunky ankle boots and a navy and bright orange belt. For a position in marketing I feel this is totally appropriate and lets me feel a little more at ease during the actual interview knowing that I'm polished but comfortable as well. I believe this helped me LAND THE JOB!!
